SOCKS client

Postby mikaeldd on Mon Jan 21, 2008 8:39 am

Hello,

I am looking for a professional-grade SOCKS client.

I have already tried:
- FreeCap: is Ok but my company doesn't want an open-source tool with no support (they want to pay!)
- HummingBird: doesn't seem very professional, no uninstall, no fine-grained application setup. And still it's distributed freely but with no support.

Very sadly, BlueCoat support told me they were no longer distributing the SOCKS client from Permeo, company they bought last year. That's really a pitty since this client seemed to have a feature which I am really interested in: centralized configuration for multiple workstations.

Anyone using a SOCKS client with which he is satisfied?

Thanks.

Mikael

Proxifier is very good for me. Moreover, I think that Blue Coat have a socks client that is called Permeo.

Permeo is on a dead end at bluecoat. I don't think bluecoat has any intention to support or develop a decent client.

2 bad ....

bespoke version of Proxyfier

Postby brenaud on Tue Jul 01, 2008 7:45 am

Hello,

For a project of migration from an ISA firewall client to a Bluecoat solution, we managed to get Proxyfier modified. I don't want to do some free advertising but the developer of the product is really amazing and he implemented for my project the following behaviour:

1/ the configuration (exception, ...) is now handled by a central text file (available on a web server)

2/ to avoid the password to be send in clear text over the wire, when the proxy is requesting a SOCKS authent, Proxyfier is doing an access to a configured URL using the DLL WININET. The Bluecoat is configured to authenticate this URL in a specified realms dedicated to SOCKS using a proxy-ip surrogate. Thus, each time Proxyfier is launched, it'll authenticate the IP address of the user station via an NTLM challenge

The version is still a beta one but I'm sure he'll release the final one soon!
