How do I disable Blue Coat K9 Web Protection?

Postby Cloudchaser » Mon Jun 22, 2009 8:21 pm

I need to know how to disable Blue Coat K9 Web Protection. It's on a computer that used to be for public use but is no longer for pubic use. The problem is that (bleep) dog does its job too well. I can't even go to sites like furaffinity.net, liveleak.com and collegehumor.com and view material that I would view with my Mother standing next to me because of adult material elsewhere on those sites. It's like not letting someone go into a Books-A-Million and view material that a Baptist preacher wouldn't object to because of the adult material elsewhere in the store.

The problem is disabling Blue Coat K9 Web Protection. Start/Run/msconfig/startup tab/uncheck Blue Coat K9 Web Protection does not work. Then I can't access anything at all because "Blue Coat K9 Web Protection is not responding."

I'm afraid to try uninstalling for two reasons.

One, that would probably be noticed (though I doubt that anyone has been checking K9's what sites have been visited log to see if employees have been surfing the 'net or myself and my co-workers would have been busted a long time ago)

Two, I fear the same thing will happen that happens with Start/Run/msconfig... and I'll be in trouble for screwing up internet access on that computer.

The reason you see "Blue Coat K9 Not Responding" after disabling the start up services is because K9 recognizes this as an unauthorized attempt to bypass K9. This is by design to prevent kids who are smarter than their parents from getting around K9.

There is no direct way to disable K9 without uninstalling it altogether. You can, however, use "Supervisor Mode" to access any site you would like for a pre-determined amount of time (up to 1 hour). You can activate Supervisor Mode by opening your K9 administration page, selecting Setup and navigating to "Advanced" on the left hand navigation. At the bottom right, there should be an option for "Enter Supervisor Mode" and a drop-down menu to select the amount of time you would like to have unfiltered access. Select "Save" when finished.

If you have any problems with supervisor mode or any other K9 questions, I recommend contacting K9 support directly by using Instant Support found at http://www2.nohold.net/noHoldCust31/Prod_16/KnowledgePortal/KPScripts//frameskp.asp?sid=162618&ds=nh21.nohold.net

After the third question, the answer should provide a link "Click Here to Email Support". This will redirect you to the K9 support form where you can submit your request for assistance.

Hope this helps!

if you dont have access to the email address that was entered when k-9 filtering was setup and also dont have the admin password if it asks for it then there is no real way to ever bypass k-9 web filtering im afraid to tell you.

reason why the needed email is mentioned is because when you try to uninstall k-9 it will send the uninstall code only to the email address registered with k-9 in the first place..

lets say the public computer was bought by you or given to you to have as yourown then the only way to remove k-9 will be accompolished by reformatting drive c:\ and reinstalling the os .

i know that reformatting is a pain in the butt.

There is never a need to format a computer to get rid of K9. Even if you don't have access to the email used to install K9, you can contact K9 support and they will provide you with a means to change the email address on file to something you can access. At which point, you can use a temporary password (which can be sent to the email address) to uninstall K9.

http://www2.nohold.net/noHoldCust31/Prod_16/KnowledgePortal/KPScripts//frameskp.asp?sid=162618&ds=nh21.nohold.net

The link above is to K9's Instant Support. When it fails to provide an solution after 3 attempts, you will be given a link to email the K9 support team directly through the support form. Let them know the situation and they will be able to change the email address on file after a verification process. If you're still having trouble with uninstalling K9, the support team does have emergency uninstall procedures that will help.

To reiterate: There is NEVER a need to format a computer to get rid of K9.

I've had the same problem. But there is no other way to really delete it (besides the right way :) ) unless you can hack it off. I'm no rocket scientist, but I think that would screw up the internet connection.
